How to Dress for a South Indian Wedding as a Guest

Dressing for a South Indian wedding as a guest depends on the specific cultural traditions of the wedding (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, or Malayali) but generally involves elegant and traditional attire. Here’s a guide for both men and women:

For Women

1. Saree: The most common and graceful choice. Opt for silk sarees like Kanjivaram, Mysore silk, or Pochampally. Bright and festive colors like red, green, gold, or pink work well.

2. Salwar Kameez or Lehenga: If you’re not comfortable in a saree, a grand Anarkali suit or a lehenga choli is a great alternative.

3. Jewelry: Gold jewelry is preferred—think jhumkas, bangles, and temple jewelry. Floral gajra (jasmine flowers) for the hair adds an elegant touch.

4. Footwear: Traditional sandals or embellished juttis work well. Avoid casual footwear.

5. Makeup & Hair: A well-tied bun with flowers or neatly done braids complements the look. Keep makeup vibrant yet subtle.

For Men

1. Veshti & Shirt: A traditional white or off-white dhoti (veshti) with a silk or cotton shirt is ideal, especially for the wedding ceremony.

2. Kurta with Dhoti/Pyjama: A silk or embroidered kurta paired with a dhoti or churidar is a great choice for guests.

3. Sherwani: If it’s a grand wedding or reception, a sherwani with a stole can be appropriate.

4. Footwear: Sandals or traditional mojris work best. Avoid sneakers.

5. Accessories: A simple gold chain or wristwatch adds elegance without being overpowering.
